BRUSH FIRE LEADS TO GARAGE
FIRE IN FIRST DUE AREA
March 17th-
Units from Shade Gap were dispatched at 17:33 hours to Locke
Road in Dublin Township for what was initially a brush fire
threatening a structure. Chief 14 arrived on the scene and
advised that the fire had spread and now had a fully involved
garage fire. Crews arrived and began to attack the fire and
protect a dwelling next to the garage. After the fire was
knocked down, firefighters began overhaul and put a blanket of
foam down on the smoldering remains of the garage. Company 14
was assisted on the scene by crews from Company 9 (Orbisonia-Rockhill),
Franklin County Companies 12 (Fannett-Metal), 21 (Metal
Township), Fulton County Company 57 (Hustontown), and Franklin
County Company 11 (Pleasant Hall) transferred to Company 14.
Units returned to service at 20:45 hours.

HOAGIE SEASON COMES TO A
CLOSE
March 15th-
Today marked the end of the annual hoagie sales at Company 14.
Since early January dedicated volunteers have made thousands of
hoagies and ham sandwiches every Friday and Saturday for happy
customers. Also held in conjunction with the hoagie sales was a
bake sale and the return of the bean soup sale which took a year
off last year but returned this year. This years hoagie sale
were a great success and the members of Company 14 would like to
thank all of those who helped at the sales and those who bought
the hoagies and ham sandwiches throughout the season, without
your help and support we couldn't have done it.

ENGINE-TANKER 14 GETS A NEW
LOOK
December 6th-After
using tie straps to hold down the hosebed tarp on ET-14 for
months, a new tarp custom made by D&S Custom Covers of Rockwood,
PA was installed. The new tarp is made of heavier material than
the original one from Pierce and features Shade Gap in
reflective lettering on the rear flap. Now, when we go to a call
and beat someone there, they will be able to tell exactly who is
in front of them.

COMPANY 14 MEMBER RESCUES 3
FROM MVA
November 19th-Today
a member of Shade Gap proved that even when we aren't at the
firehouse, we are still always ready for anything. Units from
the Pleasant Hall Fire & Ambulance Company (Franklin County
Company 11) were dispatched to the Forge Hill Road for an MVA,
reported with one on its side. Firefighter John Appleby, just
happened to be driving through the area and came upon the
accident and found a single vehicle on its side with three
people still inside, unharmed but shaken up. After looking over
the situation, he grabbed a cordless sawz-all from his vehicle
and cut the windshield out, allowing the people to crawl from
the wreckage. All three occupants were checked by Pleasant Hall
Ambulance and all signed refusals.

TRUCK 14 CLOSER TO GOING IN
SERVICE
November 17th-Today
some members took advantage of the opportunity to practice some
truck work. Firefighters were able to clean some chimneys with
the help of a ladder truck. A month ago, the company voted
to donate our old retired SCBA's to Billy Adams, Captain at
Metal Township Fire & Ambulance, to put on his ladder truck.
While negotiating the deal, he said that when we needed some
help cleaning chimneys, to give him a call and he'd bring the
truck over. During the day the crew cleaned a total of 5
chimneys in the area, without the help of the truck, it could
have taken a couple days and some sore backs to clean them all.
We would like to thank Billy Adams for bringing the truck over
for us to use, and look forward to doing it again in the future.
Oh, and by the way, contrary to the headline, Truck 14 remains
just a wish for some of our members.

FIRE PREVENTION 2007
October 12th-Members
of Company 14 visited the local elementary school for Fire
Prevention Week. Members showed students some of our equipment
and also showed them some water streams and foam. every year the
firefighters teach the children how to stop drop, and roll in
case their clothes catch fire, however this year that message
came from someone who lived through an accident with fire. Barb
Leasure, big sister of Fire Chief Rick McMullen, was burned
earlier this year in an accident in her home, and received
second degree burns to her arms and face, but the burns could
have been worse if she didn't remember to stop, drop, and roll
like she had been taught during fire prevention week when she
was a kid. Since then she has made a great recovery from the
burns and it was good to see her share her story with the
children and to show them that what they learn today, can help
them out tomorrow.

ENGINE-TANKER 14 HELPS PUMP
II CLASS
October 7th-Today
Engine-Tanker 14 went over the mountain to help our neighbors at
Fannett-Metal with a Pump Operations II class. The students set
up a water relay consisting of three tankers that shuttled
water, an engine at the drop tank, one engine in the middle of
the lay, and finally an attack engine that was supplying a truck
and two handlines. ET-14 was in the tanker shuttle and hauled 11
loads of water from the fill site to the drop tank, that totaled
16,500 gallons of water hauled by ET-14. Add that to the 56,000
gallons that the unit pumped at the house fire on October 3rd,
Engine-Tanker 14 had about 72,500 gallons go through it.

ANOTHER ONE IN SHIRLEY TWP.
THIS TIME FOR A DWELLING
October 3rd-At
15:30 hours Huntingdon County dispatched units to Shirley
Township off the Keystone Road, at 19129 Ridge Road for a possible dwelling fire, the
first alarm bringing Engine-Tanker 14 to assist. Units from
first-due Company 7 (Mount Union) arrived and found a working
fire. As the crews from 7 went to work, ET-14 arrived and was
directed to set up a drop site for tankers and supply the 5 inch
supply line going to the scene. After setting up the dump site,
Engine-Tanker 14 went on to flow around 56,000 gallons of water,
from the tanker shuttle, which due to water supply issues,
included tankers from Huntingdon, Mifflin, Franklin, and Fulton
Counties. After a long night, ET-14 was released by Command 7
and went back in service at 20:55 hours.

ANOTHER MVA ON THE MOUNTAIN
September 14th-At
16:45 hours, Huntingdon County dispatched Company 14 to Route
641 on the Neelyton Mountain for a non-injury MVA. Special Unit
14 and Deputy Chief 14 arrived and found a two vehicle MVA with
one lane blocked and fluids on the roadway. All the people
involved were self extricated, but Deputy Chief 14 requested an
ambulance from Franklin County Company 12 (Fannett-Metal) to
assist with checking the patients and to get them out of the
rainy weather. Franklin Engine 12-1 also arrived and helped
crews with traffic control and fluid containment. Due to the
rainy weather and the amount of fluids on the road, DC-14 asked
for a PennDOT truck to come and put something on the roadway to
help the condition. After PennDOT left, Company 14 returned to
quarters and went in service at 18:48 hours.

POSSIBLE FIRST DUE BUILDING
FIRE
August 19th-At
18:04 hours Huntingdon County dispatched Box 14-6 for a possible
building fire on Mountain Foot Road in Dublin Township.
Engine-Rescue 14, Engine-Tanker 14, and Chief 14 arrived to find
a small electrical fire in a storage building, with no extension
of fire from the electrical box. The power was shut off and the
box was downgraded with Chief 14 holding units from Shade Gap,
Engine 9-1 (Orbisonia-Rockhill), Franklin County Engine 12-1,
12-2, and Tanker12 (Fannett-Metal) for some slight overhaul and
to check the rest of the building for any possible extension.
Company 14 returned to service at 19:11 hours. On a lighter
note, Franklin County Engine 12-2 had some technical
difficulties at the scene and required the assistance of a back
hoe to help them out, don't worry Jason, it happens to all of
us.

CONGRATULATIONS ON 100
YEARS PATH VALLEY
August 18th-Today
Engine-Tanker 14 took a trip over the mountain to participate in
the annual Path Valley Picnic Parade. The annual picnic is
sponsored by our neighbors at Fannett-Metal Fire & Ambulance
(Franklin County Company 12) This year was a very special year
for the Path Valley Picnic because it was the 100th annual one.
ET-14 joined in with nearly 200 other entries in the parade that
was moved from its normal Thursday night, to Saturday for the
celebration. Fire apparatus from numerous counties took part in
the parade, unfortunately, Engine-Tanker 14 did not bring home
any awards but a great time was had by all. The best part of
this parade is the leaving of the fire apparatus, where
everything cranks up the lights and sirens when leaving, and
this year with over 100 pieces of fire equipment leaving, it was
quite a sight and sound. Congratulations to Fannett-Metal Fire &
Ambulance Company and everyone else in Path Valley on 100 years,
and we can't wait for next year.

124th ANNUAL SHADE GAP
PICNIC
July 29th - August 4th-
On Saturday, August the 4th, the 124th Annual Shade Gap Picnic
came to a close. This year we were blessed with some great
weather and some great crowds. The week started with the vesper
service on July 29th. Monday was when the week really got
started with the annual parade through Shade Gap, featuring
plenty of fire apparatus, floats, marching groups, bands, and of
course, the Shriners made an appearance. On Wednesday, the
Little Miss Princess pageant was held with Faith Lake being
crowned princess. The rest of the week was filled music and
entertainment on the stage, culminating in a awesome fireworks
display Saturday night to mark the end of the picnic. The
officers and members of Company 14 would like to thank all those
that either attended or helped in the various stands during the
week, without the help and support of the community, would not
have been possible.

STAT MedEVAC LANDING ZONE
CLASS HELD AT CO. 14
June 24th-
Today Company 14 hosted a landing zone safety class that was
taught by Pauline Reese from STAT MedEVAC. The class portion
covered a number of things, like when to call for an air medical
unit, how to set up a landing zone, what happens during the time
the helicopter is on the ground at the LZ, and safety around the
helicopter. After the classroom was done the class went out side
and set up a landing zone for the incoming STAT unit. The
helicopter landed and the flight crew gave the class a tour of
the unit. After the people were done checking out the
helicopter, they prepared for take-off and flew back to base. A
special thanks go out to Pauline Reese and the flight crew on
board that came to Shade Gap, and also to Cindy Snyder, who was
our contact at STAT MedEVAC and set the class up.

ET-14 FIRST ARRIVING AT
FULTON COUNTY FIRE
May 8th-
Engine-Tanker 14 was dispatched at 19:12 hours to assist Fulton
County Company 57 (Hustontown) for a reported barn fire on Great
Cove road in the village of Burnt Cabins. The Engine-Tanker
responded and while in route, Captain 57 arrived on scene and
advised a fully involved shed. ET-14 arrived first, just minutes
ahead of Engine 1-57, finding the shed had already collapsed
with only one corner still standing. The crew pulled a cross lay
and made the initial attack on the fire, knocking the bulk of it
down. Franklin County Engine 21-1 (Metal Township) arrived
behind ET-14 and gave the Engine-Tanker water. After the fire
was out, crews from 14 and 57 started hitting hotspots and
mopping up. After a short time Command 57 released Engine-Tanker
14. Before leaving the scene, the crew noticed that something
was wrong with the house beside the building, it turned out that
the building was next to the same house that Chief 14 had
crashed into earlier this year on his way to work and demolished
his truck. Seeing an opportunity to pick on the Chief, who was
not on the crew, a few pictures were taken of the front porch
that he hit, and the damage that still remains. Fortunately,
Chief 14 was not injured in his accident, if he was, we wouldn't
be picking on him.

Hey Chief, What happened to this porch?
VEHICLE GOES INTO A DUBLIN
TOWNSHIP GARAGE
May 6th-
At 02:42 hours, Huntingdon County dispatched units from Shade
Gap and Orbisonia-Rockhill for a reported MVA with a vehicle
into a garage on Croghans Pike (Rt. 522) just South of the
Little K store. Special Unit 14, Engine-Rescue 14, and Chief 14
responded along with units from Company 9. While in route,
dispatch called Chief 14 and advised that there was a vehicle
into a garage with parked vehicles hit and that the lone pt. was
out of the vehicle, then a member of the Shade Gap Fire Police
came on the air and advised that the accident was at his
residence and reported the driver was out of the vehicle. Chief
14 arrived soon after and confirmed the dispatch. As units began
to arrive and go to work it was found that a pickup had left the
roadway, hit a garage and two parked cars, the garage partially
collapsed onto a third vehicle. The driver of the truck was
inside the residence and crews were able to get a refusal and
then the driver was turned over to PSP. In all two of the parked
were demolished, the third was damaged and the original truck
was also demolished. Crews from Company 14 and Company 9
returned to service at 04:54 hours.

NEW HYDRANT IN SHADE GAP
March 25th-
Today members of Company 14 gathered for some company level
training, which was a tour of a new business in Shade Gap. The
members looked at the construction and hazards in the building
that might be encountered during an emergency. While leaving the
building, members saw a new hydrant that was just installed in
the area and decided to try it out to see how much water we
could get out of it. But, as the photo will show, we couldn't
reach the handle to use it, guess that we won't be able to use
this hydrant in an emergency.

an visit from a couple of baby goats, for a couple members who
actually helped deliver them, and other awards for members who
had their own funny moments during the year. Just to prove that
the Fire Chief was not immune to his moments, he was presented a
bumper from Special Unit 14 for when he backed into a tree with
it. A great night of fun was had by all those in attendance. A
special thanks go out to the Robertsdale, Wood, & Broad Top Fire

responding, Franklin County Headquarters came back and told
ET-14 that Juniata County now wanted them to respond on the barn
fire. The fire was in the small village of East Waterford.
Engine-Tanker 14 arrived on scene and was told to do a reverse
lay from Franklin County Engine 12-1 and establish a draft site
to supply 12-1. The crew laid 1,000 feet of 5 inch supply line
and set up a draft site in a nearby stream. After all the hose
was connected and a draft was established, Engine-Tanker 14 was
told that there would be no need for our water and that we could
break down and load back up the 1,000 feet of 5 inch that we
just laid. The crew tore down and loaded the hose back up. After
checking in at the command post, got released and returned back
home, the Engine-Tanker returned to service at 22:29 hours.

DWELLING FIRE FOLLOWED BY
MVA WITH FLYOUT
March 18th-
Today would prove to be a busy day for crews from Shade Gap,
responding to a dwelling fire and an MVA with a flyout. Shortly
after 08:00 hours, Huntingdon County dispatched units to fill
the box for a dwelling fire in Saltillo. First due Three Springs
arrived on the scene of an apparent flue fire with fire coming
from the building, Chief 12 requested the box be struck.
Engine-Tanker 14 responded and after arrival the crew went to
work helping open up the building and helped checking for
extension. Crews from several local companies battled the fire.
After the fire, the crew from Company 14 stopped by at the
firehouse in Three Springs to buy some fresh Bar-B-Que chicken
and help support the fire company. The food was excellent and
definitely hit the spot on the cold morning. Engine-Tanker 14

rear ended by another. Upon evaluating the driver, it was
determined that he needed to be flown to a trauma center. Crews
set up a landing zone near the scene for Life Lion, who flew the
patient to a trauma center. Company 14 units returned to service
at 17:03 hours.

ENGINE-TANKER SHOWS SOME
HOMETOWN PRIDE
March 11th-
Today Engine-Tanker 14 took part in welcoming a couple of area
wrestlers back home. Southern Huntingdon County High School
seniors Cody Myers and Jason Foor returned home from competing
in the PIAA State Wresting Championships held in Hershey. Cody
managed to bring home the Silver Medal, finishing second in the
state in the 119 pound class, and Jason competed but
unfortunately did not place in the tournament. For Cody, this is
the second year he has brought home a Silver Medal, last year he
took home the Silver in the 112 pound class. The Engine-Tanker
joined Three Springs Engine 12, Orbisonia-Rockhill Engine 9, and
Trough Creek Valley Engine-Rescue 21 in a parade that started in
Saltillo, moved into Three Springs, down to Rockhill and across
the bridge into Orbisonia, finally ending up in Shade Gap at
Station 14. There were a lot of lights, sirens, and air horns
going through the towns, and a lot of people came out to
congratulate the boys on a job well done. It was really great to
see all the support for the two of them as we moved from town to
town, just showing why it's great to live in the area we do.
Congratulations Cody and Jason on a great season, we're all
proud of you.
