COMPANY 14 HEADS TO BURN BUILDING

October 15th- Today members of Company 14 traveled to the Franklin County burn building to do some live fire training and practice some searches with our thermal imaging cameras. Company 14 was joined by members of Orbisonia-Rockhill, Three Springs, and Fannett-Metal Fire companies, as well as members of the Friendship Fire Company from Chambersburg and Franklin County Air 10.  The crews first did some search evolutions under smoke conditions with our thermal imaging cameras. After completing the searches, the crews then started to attack fires on the second floor of the building, practicing hose line advancement up the stairs. After a short break for lunch the crews went back in and caught some really good fires on the second floor before the building got too hot, so we moved to the first floor and had some really good fires there. The day was fun and everyone involved had a great time and will look forward to another trip back. A special thanks to the Roberstdale, Wood, and Broad Top Fire Company for covering Shade Gap while we were at the burn building, who, actually got to run a call while at Station 14, a transfer to Fulton County 57's station while they were on the scene of a house fire. Also, thanks to Fannett-Metal and Friendship Fire companies for bringing Tanker 12 (FMFD), Engine-Tanker 1 (CFD) and Franklin County Air 10 for the help at the burn building.

123rd ANNUAL SHADE GAP PICNIC

July 30th - August 5th- The time came again for the annual Shade Gap Picnic which was hosted by Company 14. The week started Sunday with a vesper service and a performance by Courtney McMullen. On Monday, things really got started, the annual parade was held which started on Main Street and continued to the picnic grounds behind Company 14. Fire and EMS apparatus from neighboring companies and counties participated in the parade, along with numerous floats and marching groups. Tuesday night, "The Lewis Family" made their annual visit to the stage, along with the "Dively & Shawver Bluegrass Gospel Band". Wednesday night the Little Miss Princess Pageant was held, this year the award went to Cassie Whitsel from Blairs Mills. After the pageant, "Dan & Gala's Musical Variety Show" took the stage. Thursday the "Lykens Valley Bluegrass Boys" performed. On Friday, "The Fabulous Flashbacks" brought the people in. And finally, Saturday was full of activates, beginning with a mini tractor pull sponsored by the Allegheny Tractor Pullers Association, on the stage, "Mountain Therapy"," Remington Ride", and "Joe Bonson & Coffee Run" performed. The week was then capped off by a fireworks display. The whole week we had beautiful weather, although a few nights were muggy, but the crowds still came in. The members of Company 14 would like to thank all those from the community who helped out during the week, and a big THANK YOU to all those who attended the picnic this year and showed your support. TRAINING NIGHT AT COMPANY 14

July 22nd- Company level training was held at Company 14 during the evening. Members did some vehicle extrication drills with the Amkus unit. The night started off with a refresher on how to stabilize a vehicle and how to operate the Amkus rescue tools. After that, the crews split up and the more experienced members cut the first car up. A volunteer played the part of a victim for some new EMT's to practice pt. care and packaging. The crew popped all the doors, rolled the roof forward, and did a full lay-down on both sides of the vehicle. After the first evolution was complete, the newer, less experienced members (a.k.a. PROBIES) got a turn at the Amkus tools. With some help by the experienced members, they too popped doors, removed a roof, did two lay-downs, and the did a dashboard lift. Since most of our extrications occur at night, the majority of the drills were done under the lights to provide more realism. A lot of fun was had by those in attendance, but then again, anytime we can take a nice, good car and turn it into scrap (in training) it's always fun.

2006 HUNTINGDON COUNTY CONVENTION

June 18th,22nd,23rd,&24th- Volunteer Firefighters and EMT's from all over Huntingdon County came together for the annual Huntingdon County Firemen's Convention. This year the host company was our neighbors from Company 9, Orbisonia-Rockhill. The festivities started on the 18th with a memorial service. On the 22nd the games began, starting with the EMS games being followed by the County Little Miss Princess Pageant. Friday night the 23rd was the first day of firefighter games. A team from Company 14 participated in the first game, the Search & Rescue/ Quick Attack contest. The team got off to a good start but had a little problem connecting the hose, which cost some time, however, the crew worked together and still completed the course with a good time. Shortly after completing our run in the contest, Company 14 was dispatched for a medical call on Main Street in Shade Gap Boro, some of the members responded to the call and returned to the games afterward. Just as the crew from 14 was getting ready to run in the second game of the night, the Bucket Brigade, Huntingdon County hit our tones again, this time for a tractor fire in Tell Township. After that call was cleared, some members returned back to the games for the rest of the evening. On Saturday some members played in the other two games, the Pumping Contest and the Battle of the Barrell. After the games were over, crews regrouped and came together for the annual parade, followed by the County Queen Pageant. Special Unit 14 was able to bring home the second place trophy for Best Appearing Special Unit. After another fun weekend at the convention, firefighters are already looking forward to next year's convention.
